Cat Breeds
Do you want to have an exotic cat? There are many beautiful breeds, some are rather exotic and rare breeds. And the temptation to get such a rare breed might be very high. If you import a cat, because it originates from a rather rare breed, this might be the wrong choice! Mostly a cat should not be kept alone, it should have a companion, if you are not at home the whole day. A cat needs an interesting environment and needs something to play with. Only to buy some toys for your cat is not enough. A cat needs attention and someone who likes to play with it. Thus, it might be rather difficult to find the right companion for your cat, when you import a cat originating from a rather rare breed, because very often those cats are closely related to each other or are still out crossed with other breeds. And that is not a good choice, when you want to start also with breeding your cat. Never start your breeding program with cats which are too closely related! You might face unwanted and unforeseen surprises concerning defects and concerning the temperament. It needs a lot of experience to choose the right cat from the right cattery. It needs a lot of experience to choose the right breeding couple. You must have owned cats or having bred cats for at least 10-15 years to be able here to make the correct choice. You must be an expert when reading and interpreting a pedigree. And that is absolutely necessary, when buying cats from rather exotic and rare breeds. You must be able to see from a pedigree, which combinations (i.e. mating) have produced stabilized litters, thus to say, which combinations from which catteries have produced good cats concerning the quality and concerning their health and temperament. Rare breeds are mostly in their beginning to get settled. Thus their generations are not fixed concerning unwanted defects and mostly also concerning an equilibrated and stabilized temperament. Especially when such cats face stress, their behaviour might be unpredictable. And you want to have a cat, which is easy going and easy to be handled in every situation. It takes 10 or even more domesticated generations to breed out unwanted traits and to fix the personality. |
